Color Studio — OKLCH palette tool
A tool for creating balanced palettes for UI & visualization
Color Studio is a tool for choosing colors based on the OKLCH model. Its algorithm is built on the placement of colors on the color wheel and with color themes direction. It also allows you to create tonal color scales, such as those suitable for TailwindCSS and semantic color palettes in the style of Radix Colors.
Creating a harmonious color palette for UI and especially for data visualizations and charts is a challenging task. Typically, such tools rely on random generating or predefined schemes with hard-coded colors. We wanted to create something new that offered complete control, especially over how colors are matched. That’s why we built our tool based on the OKLCH model and the color wheel. This significantly simplifies color selection based on chroma, lightness, and hue, unlike traditional HSL models. Moreover, we went a step further and introduced color directions: when you specify a color range, the algorithm selects balanced colors within that range.
This is a versatile tool, suitable for both choosing colors for data visualization and creating palettes for UI design. It includes automatically generated tonal scales for the selected palette, for example, those suitable for TailwindCSS and semantic scales in the style of Radix Colors. And, of course, it creates utility grayscale colors that can be tinted to match the palette’s anchor color.
The tool works in both light and dark themes, with the option to set a background color to see how the palette will look in your project.
We’re considering adding advanced export features, the ability to save palettes, and links to palettes so they can be shared.
