CoatCAL
Calculate STEP/STL surface area instantly in your browser
Calculate surface area and overall dimensions from STL and single-body STEP/STP files directly in your browser. Files are processed locally — no upload, account, or CAD installation required. Includes a 3D preview, bounding box, unit conversion, and support for files up to 500 MB.
CoatCAL started from a real task at work.
I was asked to download STEP files, measure their surface area, convert the result to m², and use that for coating calculations in our coating shop.
Doing that repeatedly in CAD felt unnecessarily slow, so I started building a browser tool that could do it in a few seconds.
CoatCAL currently supports STL and single-body STEP/STP files up to 500 MB, with surface area, X/Y/Z dimensions and a 3D preview — all processed locally in the browser.
I’ve validated the STEP calculations against Creo, but now I want real-world testing.
Please try to break it 😄
If you have a weird, large or messy CAD file, throw it at CoatCAL and tell me what happens

Who hunted CoatCAL?
CoatCAL was hunted by Patrick Kraus. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
