Chromatic Gallery
Modern React gallery with chromatic sorting magic
Chromatic gallery sorts your photos round the colour wheel by their dominant colour. Give your photos a curated look with no manual arranging. Responsive design, fast loading filters, a swipeable lightbox, blur placeholders, deep links, dark mode and translations are all built in, and the build-time helpers that extract the colours ship in the same package.
Hi Product Hunt 👋
I built chromatic-gallery for my own portfolio. My photo page was a wall of thumbnails in upload order, and that order meant nothing to anyone. Even with good pictures, it just looked busy and didn't tell a visually cohesive story.
So I tried sorting the photos by their dominant colour. Neighbouring tiles share a palette, the page runs from warm to cool, and the whole set looks curated without me arranging anything by hand. Browsing by colour turned out to be a much nicer way to explore a few hundred photos too, so I added a tone wheel you can drag to see only the blues or the reds.
Once it worked on my site, I turned it into a complete React gallery: filters, grid, masonry and timeline views, a swipeable lightbox, blur placeholders and duplicate detection. The build-time colour extraction comes in the same package, as well as capturing and striping EXIF data. It works in any React 18+ app and takes an afternoon to add.
It’s free and MIT licensed. I’d love to hear what you think, especially from photographers and anyone with a big archive to show off.
