CheckMyVIN
Free AI vehicle reports — Carfax alternative with MCP
Free AI VIN decoder for any US-titled vehicle. Paste a VIN, get a printable report in ~30s: specs, open NHTSA safety recalls, maintenance data (oil, tires, fluids), and an AI buying summary with a 1–10 score. What's different: it handles EVs correctly (battery info, not oil specs), never invents data it doesn't have, and ships an MCP server so Claude can decode VINs in-chat. Free embeddable widget too. Built on free official government data.
Hey Product Hunt 👋
I built CheckMyVIN because paid VIN report services charge $25–45, but a lot of the core data is actually free government data. The NHTSA APIs decode any VIN and list open safety recalls — no API key, no cost. I layered a hand-curated maintenance database (40 brands) and an AI summary on top.
What you get, free:
🚗 Decoded specs — make, model, year, engine, transmission, plant
⚠️ Open safety recalls, straight from NHTSA
🔧 Maintenance specs — oil type, tire size, fluids
🤖 An AI summary with strengths, things to watch, and a 1–10 buying score
🖨️ A printable report you can save as PDF or email to yourself
Three things I'm proud of:
EV handling. Most VIN tools tell your Tesla what oil it needs. Ours branches for EVs — battery warranty info instead of oil specs.
No hallucinated data. If I don't have a real spec (tire size varies by trim), the report says "check the door jamb sticker" instead of guessing.
MCP server. You can call CheckMyVIN directly from Claude or any MCP client — decode a VIN without leaving your chat. Endpoint: checkmyvin.net/api/mcp
There's also a free embeddable widget if you run a car forum or dealer site.
Honest about money: the free tier is genuinely free. We earn through optional affiliate links to full paid history reports (accident/title data, which NHTSA doesn't cover).
Would love feedback — especially on the AI summaries and the MCP integration. Happy to answer anything about the NHTSA APIs or the Cloudflare Workers setup. 🙏
