As a DJ for over 15 years and a computer programmer for roughly 7, I more recently pivoted to a career in music and technology where clean songs are essential for the spaces I'm working in. For the longest time to do this I relied on the experience from my DJ years and I was manually creating clean edits. Initially I was finding an instrumental of the track and muting the explicit word up against the original track. Then when Stems came out, I would layer the different Stems in a DAW and mute the explicit word in the a cappella. Finally technology changed a little bit and I was able to use both my DJ and CS background to come up with a tool and would create the clean edit in a matter of minutes (or less!). Initially it was an internal tool I only handed out to a few colleagues but I decided to build it out in full and make it available for everyone. It uses GPU's on the backend for speed (as well as a lot of other tweaks to speed things up), and doesn't just rely on Stem separation and transcription for the explicit detection, it always checks against lyric databases as backup. In addition to that, it allows the user to choose their explicit threshold -- for example, is "God" (and related words) something you want removed? Is "Ass"(and related words) something you want removed? For many users, those aren't considered explicit content, for others they are. On top of that, Censorly allows for real-time manual edits to be made to the track in case the processing missed something or the user just wants to add a word or phrase to the mute section.
