Caveat
Find financial risks. Know why, what to do, and compare
Caveat turns financial statements into actionable insights. Upload your statements to find potential risks, understand why they may be happening, see what to look at next, and compare your financial position with other businesses. We're early and building in public. Try Caveat and tell us what we're missing.
Why I’m building Caveat
A lot of business owners have financial statements, accounting software, and even accountants but still struggle to answer simple questions:
Why is cash falling? Why is inventory building up? Is this a temporary issue or a real financial risk? What should I look at next?
I’m an ACCA member and have spent years working with financial reporting and management in international manufacturing businesses. I kept seeing the same gap: financial statements give you a lot of information, but not necessarily the story.
I think of financial statements like an alphabet. Individual numbers are the building blocks, but the meaning emerges when you connect them.
Cash is falling. Inventory is rising. Profit still looks fine.
What does that actually mean?
That’s the problem I’m trying to solve with Caveat.
Upload your financial statements and Caveat looks for potential financial risks, connects relevant movements across the statements, explores possible reasons, and suggests what management may want to look at next. The longer-term goal is also to make it easier to compare your financial position with relevant businesses.
You don't need to be a finance expert. Just upload your financial statements and see what Caveat finds.
How the idea evolved
I initially thought the answer was simply better financial ratios.
But ratios alone don't explain much. A ratio can tell you that something changed, but often not why it changed or what it means for the business.
So I started connecting movements across cash, working capital, profitability, debt and other financial indicators to identify relationships and possible causes.
That led to the approach I'm building today:
What happened → Why might it be happening → What should management investigate → How does it compare?
Caveat is still an early MVP, and this is where I need your help.
I'm looking for a few founders, business owners, accountants, and finance professionals to try it with their financial statements and tell me:
- What did Caveat help you notice?
- What didn't make sense?
- What would you want it to explain or analyze next?
You don't need to commit to anything. Just try it, challenge the analysis, and tell me what you think. Your feedback will directly shape what I build next.
