First of all, the PE is the licensing exam US engineers sit to put "P.E." after their name. Eight hours, computer-based, open to one reference — the NCEES Handbook. Passing changes what you're legally allowed to sign.
What got me building was a pattern I kept seeing in candidate forums: people drill a practice bank until they're scoring 80–90% on it, sit the exam, and meet problems they've never seen. They hadn't learned the method — they'd learned that bank. The sets are finite, and finite sets get memorized.
