Cadenza
Open-source voice typing that runs on your Mac
Hold a shortcut, speak, and release to type at your cursor. Cadenza runs speech recognition locally on macOS, with no account or telemetry. Free and MIT licensed, with custom shortcuts, vocabulary, and optional text polish. Early preview.
Hi Product Hunt! I'm the maker of Cadenza, an open-source voice input app for macOS.
The interaction is simple: hold a shortcut, speak, and release. The text is inserted where your cursor is. Left Option is the default; you can change it or use a tap-to-start-and-stop shortcut.
I wanted voice typing that I could use without creating an account or depending on a hosted dictation service. Cadenza runs recognition on your Mac with models you download inside the app. SenseVoice is the recommended starting point; other models offer different language, speed, and memory tradeoffs. You can compare configured recognizers with your own voice rather than rely on a general accuracy claim.
There is also a vocabulary manager, local text tidying, optional AI polish and voice translation, and screenshot text recognition. Cloud speech services are optional, use your own credentials, and require consent for each provider. Remote text polish or translation has its own consent. The app has no telemetry and does not save your recordings.
This is a public early preview, not a polished final release. It requires macOS 14+, and the download is not Apple-notarized yet; the website explains the first-launch steps. Intel and older macOS versions have CI coverage but still need hands-on feedback. The newer cloud integrations have not been tested with real accounts.
Cadenza is free and MIT licensed. I'd love feedback on recognition with your accent and microphone, shortcut ergonomics, and whether text reaches the intended app. Issues and contributions are welcome!
