Born in Japan
Live a whole life in Japan, shaped by chance and choice
What if you were born in Japan? Live a whole life, year by year, through school, work, love and unexpected turns. A free browser game grounded in official Japanese statistics, with assumptions labeled. Discover everyday Japan beyond the tourist trail.
Hi Product Hunt! I'm the maker of Born in Japan.
I came across a life simulator where you are born somewhere in the world and live out a whole life, and loved how following one person's life made distant numbers feel real. I wanted to share Japan's everyday life and culture the same way.
You can't choose where, when or into what family you're born. Press "Be born" and you get a random prefecture, a birth year between 1947 and 2010, and a family. Then you live year by year through school, work, marriage, housing, money, caregiving and about 130 historical events, with a decision now and then. At the end you see how rare your life was, plus a title and a life graph you can share.
What's inside:
- Probabilities based on official Japanese statistics (life tables, wages, marriage, pensions and more), with every assumption disclosed
- Special editions: sumo wrestler, doctor, comedian, YouTuber, startup founder, English teacher (ALT) and more
- History specials: live as Oda Nobunaga or Tokugawa Ieyasu, or travel through Tokyo's eras
- Free, no sign-up
It's still a beta, so I'd love your feedback: what looks wrong, and which life you'd like to live next. Thanks for trying it!

Who hunted Born in Japan?
Born in Japan was hunted by Kohei Tsukazaki.
