Battleships

Online Battleships: play a friend, beat the AI, watch live

Hide your fleet, read the water, sink theirs first. Battleships runs in the browser with no download: create a room, share a five-letter code or a QR, and play live with a friend while others watch with fog of war. Three AI opponents, three rule sets (Classic, Salvo and Arsenal with sonar, torpedoes, airstrikes and shields), boards from 8×8 to 15×15, leaderboards, naval ranks and achievements. Free, works on phones, keyboard-playable, and the server keeps ship positions hidden by construction.

Hi Product Hunt! I'm Stanislav, the maker of Battleships. I wanted the game I played on paper as a kid to work the way a modern web app should: open a link, share a five-letter code, and play live with a friend on any phone or laptop, with no download and no account needed. Along the way it grew three AI opponents, Salvo and Arsenal rule sets with abilities like sonar and torpedoes, spectators with fog of war, leaderboards, naval ranks and achievements. Two things I'm proud of: the server never sends a client enough to work out where an unsunk ship is (and tests prove it), and the whole thing is keyboard-playable and screen-reader friendly. It was built as an experiment in AI-orchestrated development, directed end to end by one person. The full case study is at battleships.app/credits. I'd love to hear what you think, and I'm happy to answer anything about how it was built.

Who hunted Battleships?

Battleships was hunted by Stanislav Stoynov. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
