backi.app

Your WhatsApp photos, sorted into folders by local AI

Drop an exported WhatsApp chat ZIP and backi.app sorts it into folders: photos by topic (people, memes, food, screenshots…), videos, audio, PDFs. The AI runs in your browser, so your files never touch our servers. Save to Google Drive or as a ZIP

Hey Product Hunt! 👋

I'm the maker of backi.app.

The problem: I'm in a bunch of family and work groups on WhatsApp. Every time I exported a chat to back up the photos and documents, I got a ZIP with hundreds of files named like `IMG-20240312-WA0042.jpg`, all dumped in one folder. Finding anything was painful, and organizing it by hand took forever.

What backi.app does:

  1. You drop the exported chat ZIP

  2. Photos are split by topic: people, memes, landscapes, food, animals, screenshots, documents and papers…

  3. Videos, audio notes, PDFs, stickers and contacts go to their own folders

  4. You save it all to your Google Drive or download an organized ZIP

The part I care about most is privacy. Everything runs in your browser. There's no backend: the ZIP is opened, analyzed and sorted on your own device, and the AI model (CLIP, via transformers.js in a Web Worker) runs locally too. The chat text itself is thrown away and never uploaded. Google Drive access uses the `drive.file` scope, so the app can only see the files it creates.

Pricing: the preview is free, so you can see exactly how your folders will look before paying. Saving costs USD 5 per chat (or packs of 3 and 5). No account, no subscription.

🎁 For the Product Hunt community: 1 free conversion. Pick "1 conversion" at checkout and use the code GGP3B7Z09A7O.

Stack, for the curious: Vite + React + TypeScript, zip.js to read the export without loading it all into memory, transformers.js + CLIP for photo topics (WebGPU when available, WASM otherwise), Google Identity Services + Drive API, Dodo Payments for license keys. Hosted as a static site.

What's next: OneDrive and Dropbox. I'd love to know which one you'd use, and if there's a folder or category you think is missing.

Thanks for checking it out. I'll be here all day answering questions! 🙌
