I built this because I kept needing to cut out product photos, and every tool wanted an upload, an account, a watermark, or all three.
Browsers can run neural networks now, so the upload is a design choice rather than a technical requirement. Backgroundoff downloads a 4.4 MB segmentation model to your browser and runs it there. Your photo is read from your disk into the page, processed on your own processor, and drawn back on a canvas. Nothing is sent anywhere — which you can check yourself by disconnecting from the internet after the page loads.
Being honest about the trade-off: a model small enough to ship to a browser is not the most accurate one in existence. It struggles with loose hair and with subjects that are the same colour as their background. That is why it includes erase and restore brushes — fixing an edge by hand takes seconds and beats waiting on a server.

I would especially like feedback on images where the cut-out fails. Those are the ones that tell me what to fix next.
