Back

Stop checking. Know when your AI tools are back

Back is a tiny Mac menu bar app for AI outages. It watches Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Gemini, Copilot and more, then tells you when they’re usable again. Pro keeps watching while your Mac sleeps and can notify you through Slack, Telegram or email.

Hey PH, this is one of those things I built because I got annoyed enough.

Every time Claude went down (which is pretty frequent in past months when there is an outage at least once a week), I ended up doing the same stupid loop: retry → open the status page → go back → retry again.

The outage itself is unavoidable. Spending the next 30 mins - 1 hrs checking whether it’s over isn’t.

So I built Back.

It sits in the Mac menu bar, watches Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and the other AI tools I use, and tells me when they’re actually usable again.

The part I care about most is the recovery notification. I don’t really need another app yelling that Claude is down, I’ve already figured that out. I want something to tell me when I can stop thinking about the outage and get back to work.

I also wanted to be able to actually leave the desk. Pro keeps watching when the Mac sleeps and can send the recovery to Slack, Telegram or email.

I kept the rest deliberately boring:

- no account
- no subscription
- no access to prompts, files or AI accounts
- no analytics SDK inside the app
- failed status checks become “unknown” instead of pretending the service is down

Pro is $5 once for early users, and I’ll move it to $9.99 later.

Also, if there’s an AI service you depend on that I missed, tell me. I’m trying to keep the list useful rather than add 50 logos for the sake of it.

Who hunted Back?

Back was hunted by Shubham Gupta. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
