Ask the Ledger - ERP for Distributors
On-premise ERP for wholesale distributors with AI reporting
I spent 25 years building custom business software. Then I noticed every wholesale distributor was either stuck on QuickBooks + spreadsheets or paying $150/user/month for cloud ERP that fought their workflow. So I built Ask the Ledger: an on-premise Windows ERP on PostgreSQL with route delivery, recurring billing, 5-tier pricing, POS, a B2B customer portal, and AI reporting that answers plain-English questions about your data.
Hey PH — I'm Joseph, the founder of Ask the Ledger.
I've been building business software for over 25 years, mostly in Delphi, for clients across healthcare, long-term care, secure communications, and financial operations. Over that time I built asset tracking systems, HIPAA-compliant email servers, biometric time clocks, DNS filtering servers, accrual systems, purchasing platforms, and a lot of custom database work.
A few years ago I realized that every wholesale distributor I talked to had the same problem: they were running their business on software that was either too simple (QuickBooks with spreadsheets on the side) or too complex and expensive (NetSuite, SAP Business One). The mid-market options all moved to cloud subscriptions with per-user fees that climb every year, and most of them were designed for general businesses — not for the specific workflows that distributors live in every day.
So I built Ask the Ledger. It's a Windows desktop ERP designed specifically for wholesale distribution. Here's what's different:
- **On-premise by design.** Your data stays on your server. PostgreSQL database. You control backups, upgrades, and access. No monthly per-user fees that scale with headcount.
- **Distribution-specific workflows.** Route delivery with driver manifests and stop sequencing. Recurring billing that auto-generates invoices on schedule. 5-tier customer pricing with quantity breaks and price exceptions. Lot traceability with recall support for food distributors.
- **AI reporting.** Ask your data questions in plain English: "What were total sales for customer X last quarter?" or "Which items are below reorder point?" and get answers immediately without writing SQL or building a report.
- **B2B customer web portal.** Your wholesale customers log in, see their pricing, place orders, reorder from past invoices, view their statement, and submit returns. Connected to the same live database — no sync layer, no nightly batch.
- **POS module.** Touch-friendly point of sale for retail storefronts, counter sales, farmers markets, and trade shows. Multi-location, booth mode, barcode scanning.
The whole thing is one integrated system. Inventory, pricing, orders, invoicing, AR, AP, delivery, production planning, and reporting all share one database. No integrations to maintain, no data to reconcile.
I'm a solo founder based in Brooklyn. Happy to answer any questions about the product, the architecture decisions, or the experience of building on-premise software in 2026 when everyone else is going cloud.
