Analog TV Simulator
Fully signal accurate TV simulator - Not a filter, Not AI
The most accurate old TV simulator and VHS generation loss simulator for iPhone, iPad and Mac. Camera tube, VHS tape degradation, CRT phosphor, Pay TV scrambling (Videocrypt, Nagravision, VideoCipher II, SSAVI/Z-TAC) — simulated from first principles. Not a filter. NTSC, PAL, SECAM and more.
This started as a labor of love to recreate with absolute fidelity the look and sound of television from the earliest era until the end of the CRT era. There are many "filter" apps that overlay scan lines and other effects over the top of an existing video, this is what we wanted to avoid. We do not directly touch any pixels.
Analog TV starts with first principles - the video is first converted to a composite signal and everything is implemented in the signal domain. All of the artefacts emerge from effects on the raw signal. We also model the chemistry of the camera and television tubes. The point of difference is the absolute attention to detail with all the effects backed by documented spec sheets, patent filings and other technical documentation.
The UI leaves something to be desired at the moment. The absolute focus was on the full signal pipeline and the fidelity to the original technical specifications. There are several Easter eggs buried in the app (such as a magnet mode) that we actually used during development to ensure absolute fidelity.
The app is now good enough that it is fully usable by Analog TV enthusiasts, retro gamers, people wanting to "play with all the dials" and learn how TV became a part of our lives. The Mechanical TV part of the app replicates the earliest television technology which was not electronic, but mechanical.
Our plans for the future are a massive uplift in the UX and targeting it more to the professional video production market. At that time we will lift the price appropriately. For the foreseeable future we believe this represents good value for a very unique plaything.
