AgroShield
Crypto-powered crop insurance for african smallholders
AgroShield is a decentralized parametric crop insurance platform on the Stellar blockchain that gives smallholder farmers fast, affordable protection against drought. Instead of slow manual claims, it uses weather data: if rainfall falls below a set threshold, the smart contract automatically pays the farmer. Built for maize farmers in Makueni, Kenya, it also offers early alerts, crop advice, and an on-chain coverage history to improve future access to credit.
Hey everyone
Excited to launch AgroShield today.
The inspiration for this project came from seeing how climate shocks, especially drought, keep pushing smallholder farmers across Africa deeper into vulnerability. In many rural communities, a single bad season can wipe out a family’s income, yet fewer than 3% of African smallholder farmers have access to any form of crop insurance. Traditional insurance simply doesn’t work for them — claims take months, costs are too high, and payouts often arrive too late to matter.
That frustration became the starting point for AgroShield. We wanted to build something that could actually deliver protection at the speed and cost small farmers need.
Our approach evolved quite a bit along the way. We began with the idea of a pure automatic payout system using parametric triggers on the Stellar blockchain. As we kept refining the concept, we realized insurance alone wasn’t enough. Farmers also need early warnings before the drought hits, practical guidance during the season, and a way for their coverage history to help them access credit later. So the project grew from a simple payout tool into a broader financial safety net that supports farmers before, during, and after climate shocks.
We’re starting with maize farmers in Kenya, but the vision is to serve smallholder farmers across Africa. We’re still early, but we’re excited about the direction. Would love to hear your thoughts, questions, or feedback.
