Build collaborative environments in just a few lines of code
Spaces enables developers to create a collaborative environment around their application, in just a few lines of code. The Spaces SDK comes with purpose-built APIs for easily building avatar stacks, member location, live cursors, and component locking.
Hello Hacker News,
My team and I wanted to help developers use Ably’s Pub/Sub Channels to create multiplayer collaboration features for their apps by creating impactful educational and onboarding resources.
But after speaking with a lot of developers, both our customers and friends externally, we recognised the need for purpose-built APIs that are optimised exactly for the payload structure, frequency of updates and end user experience uniquely anticipated for each feature.
This means less time spent by developers architecting the lower-level but flexible features such as channels, presence and history that we offer.
Thus came a new product “Spaces” — to help developers build collaborative spaces in their apps in just a few lines of code. Right now, it enables four main features — avatar stacks, member locations, live cursors and component locking (my personal favourite)!
Spaces is completely free to try, so please sign up for a developer account and let me know what you think.
We’ll be around to answer any questions but really hope you would check it out and share your feedback.
Thank you!

Who hunted Spaces?
Spaces was hunted by Srushtika Neelakantam. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
