Video chat like it's 1989. Why use 4K? We use 4 colors.
Retro peer-to-peer video calls. Styled like a handheld from 1991. Feels like play. Navigate with a D-pad, mute with a B button, and "print" thermal-paper printouts, complete with printer sound. Every other video app competes on fidelity and speed. 2bit drops you to 128×112 pixels, 4 colors, and 15fps. Ten art-inspired color palettes (Hokusai, Rothko, Blade Runner…), chiptune sound effects, a pixel font throughout. It's opinionated in a category where everything else looks identical.
Video chat became a chore. "Hop on a video call" turned into a dreaded phrase. The meetings, the calendars, the "you're on mute," the anxiety about how you look on camera. Meanwhile, I have pure affection of my memories of early gaming cameras: terrible, 4-color cameras that people loved because they were playful. So I thought "what if video calling felt like that instead?"
There were a few problems to solve.
Camera anxiety: at 128×112 pixels in 4 colors, nobody looks bad, tired, or unshowered. The lo-fi filter is a social equalizer. You can take a call from bed.
Friction: most video apps demand downloads, accounts, and logins before you can say hello. 2bit is: open link, share 6 letters, talk.
Privacy: peer-to-peer means the video never touches a server. Nothing to store, nothing to leak.
Sameness: every video app is the same white rectangle. There was room for one with a personality.
I started playing with the core tech first: WebRTC plumbing, signaling, a dither shader, to prove that the weird idea worked. Then the toy evolved from "video with a filter" into a full virtual handheld: D-pad, A/B buttons, a printer that spits out snapshots with a dot-matrix sound. The device metaphor took over as the product.
Then we commissioned original chiptune-style audio and decided on a $2.99 one-time Pro unlock (palettes, 4-person rooms, case colors, no watermark). Decided on no sign-ups even for paying users.
Then, we did the unglamourous polish: hardening, security audits, rate limiting, PWA install flows, mobile keyboard quirks, waiting-room fairness.
Basically, I started with a joke premise then took it completely seriously. Please take 2bit on a test-drive, and let me know what you think.
